Asakusa Hanayashiki — Japan's Oldest Amusement Park
#tokyo #sightseeing #asakusa #family
Asakusa is best known for Senso-ji temple and its lantern-lined shopping streets, but tucked three minutes behind the main pagoda is something much smaller and older: Hanayashiki, Japan’s oldest amusement park.
A park with 170+ years of history
Hanayashiki opened in 1853 as a flower garden (hence the name, which literally means “flower estate”) and was gradually converted into an amusement park over the following decades. Today it operates on a tiny urban footprint — the rides are stacked and threaded through one another in a way that feels almost impossible for a modern park.
It’s not Disneyland. That’s the point. It’s retro, crowded, charmingly creaky, and unlike anywhere else in Tokyo.
The rides
- Roller Coaster — Japan’s oldest operational roller coaster (1953). It whips around at modest speeds but comes within inches of apartment buildings — which is more unsettling than any big coaster.
- Space Shot — a free-fall tower with a surprisingly strong kick.
- Disk-O, Little Star, Pyong Pyong — mid-range spinning rides.
- Haunted House & Thriller Car — classic retro scares.
- Merry-go-round, helicopter ride, swan boats, Kiddy Taxi — gentler options for young children.
